In a region shaped by both challenge and change, voices like yours matter more than ever. The YaLa Academy for Citizen Journalism empowers young people across the Middle East and North Africa to become digital storytellers, media activists, and advocates for a better future. Through hands-on training and meaningful cross-cultural dialogue, weâre building a powerful network of citizen journalists who are tech-savvy, socially aware, and ready to lead.
At YaLa, we believe in the power of storiesâand in the people who tell them. Social media and digital platforms have transformed how we connect, offering everyday citizens the chance to raise their voices and shine a light on the issues that matter. But with that power comes responsibility.
Thatâs why we created the YaLa Citizen Journalism Programâto give you the tools, confidence, and ethical grounding to tell your story with clarity, purpose, and impact.
Over the course of three months, you’ll take part in an exciting and interactive online journey hosted by the Aileen Getty School of Citizen Journalism. The core of the program is a series of video lectures from top international journalists and media expertsâfrom outlets like Al Jazeera, CNN, AP, National Geographic, and moreâcovering essential topics in the world of journalism and digital media.
These expert sessions are supplemented by live Zoom meetings and workshops led by the YaLa Young Leaders team, where youâll dive deeper into each topic, take part in group discussions, and develop your practical skills in a supportive, diverse learning environment.
Topics include; Storytelling and journalistic writing, podcasting, fake news, media literacy, and critical thinking, social media strategy and digital activism, Peace, gender, identity, and culture in the MENA region.
But the course is about more than media skillsâitâs about people and the meaningful connections they foster. Youâll join a diverse group of peers from Palestine, Israel, and across the MENA region. Together, you’ll explore each other’s cultures, share experiences, and build lasting friendships rooted in respect, openness, and shared purpose.
Each week includes one expert video lecture and one live Zoom session with the YaLa team. Youâll also complete weekly assignments and collaborate on creative storytelling projects. To complete the course, you must attend sessions regularly, participate actively, and submit a final projectâa written article, podcast, or video
documentaryâwhich weâll help you publish and promote. Outstanding projects will be featured on YaLa Press, our official media platform.

The YaLa Alumni Community is where the journey continuesâbeyond the courses, beyond the programs. Bringing together graduates of both the Citizen Journalism and Entrepreneurship tracks, this vibrant and diverse network connects young changemakers from across the MENA region who share a deep commitment to dialogue, creativity, and regional impact. We regularly create meaningful monthly alumni sessionsâfor example, cultural exchange sessions, writing workshops, uni-national meetups, mental health and stress management sessions, and community networking sessionsâheld both on Zoom and in person. These gatherings offer safe, supportive spaces for reflection, connection, and resilience, especially in times of regional or personal challenge.
As part of our commitment to continued growth, we also share exclusive opportunities with our alumniâinternational conferences, seminars, and exchange programs that bring YaLa voices to the global stage. Each month, we send out an Opportunities Newsletter featuring fellowships, scholarships, regional job openings, and spotlights on the inspiring work our alumni are leading. The alumni community is more than just a networkâitâs a space where ideas evolve, impact deepens, and lifelong connections are nurtured.
âThis program taught me how to listen to the other side of conflicts and see their point of view. Once you give your enemies a chance to speak, you may find that you are no longer enemies.â
T from Palestine
âItâs been an amazing journey. I have been around with a lot of people and this is the first time I had the opportunity to meet people across cultures. I never had this type of interactions with Palestinians and Israelis, Iâm used to only hearing about them on TV. This is resilience. I would forever cherish these moments.â
C from Sierra Leone
âOn a personal and universal level these are challenging times, and Iâm touched people are able to attend this. Itâs rare and Iâm thankful I can be in this program and that this kind of program is made possible.â
K from Israel
âIt was really amazing to see that despite our differences we have so much in common.â
M from Libya
âFinally I had the chance to find that podcasts are simple enough to make and can help create a communityâ
L from Morocco
