Headliner by Asma, Sudan
They won’t give me a platform to speak on
Females don’t headline nor sell out halls
I’m a woman
Giving me an audience to share my views with would be a mistake
I’d address issues of race, violence and challenge the perception of gender roles
I’d tell stories unheard and unspoken
Of how I dared to go off side
How I escaped the kitchen
And travelled far and wide
How my vision never ends
Eyes that have been exposed to darkness and light
How my soul has been ignited by human beings of every kind
How books have expanded my imagination
And gave life to my life
Still
They won’t give me a platform to speak on
Because I’m a woman
With a voice
Thus
Not woman enough
Art, poetry, sport and the dreams I speak of are to be taken lightly
“Consider them hobbies”
“You know”
“Because raising children is all that’s right”
