Community Gardens by Lucas, Palestine – photo essay –

This summer I took these photos of a group of youth volunteers, who were creating a community garden. We worked very hard and we painted with the children, as well as taught them how to plant and care for this garden. Sadly, I’m not there now to see what it looks like. Farming has always been an important part of Palestinian culture. Because of Israeli land annexation, barriers put between farmers and their land, and urbanization, many Palestinians are losing their connection to the land and the traditions of being a part of the environment that helps us live. This was the beginning of an attempt to remember the history of our connection to the earth. It also serves as a way to promote sustainable living by trying to create a source of nutrition, which is important to combat the rising rates of diabetes and high blood pressure in Palestine.
